Dedication Ceremony – October 4, 1998

Twenty-five years ago, on October 4, 1998, a small group of people gathered on a ridge along the Alpine Scenic Loop for the dedication of The Redford Family Nature Wildlife Preserve. The ceremony marked the gift of a conservation easement from the Redford Family to Utah Open Lands. This easement protects about 900 acres of important wildlife habitat, high mountain meadows, wetlands, and scenic vistas bordering US Forest Service lands.

“This is my gift to my community, myself, and most of all, my children, to pass on to their children, so they can experience the land as something real rather than something seen in movies or described in history books or only imagined.”

ROBERT REDFORD

“Of all the things about my father I’m most proud of–all of his accomplishments and talents–I don’t think anything equals the pride I feel in the values he represents by making this gesture to Utah Open Lands.”

JAMES REDFORD

“As a child, I always found this landscape magical. As an adult, I have an even greater appreciation for this place. I am grateful to my father for devoting so much of his life to the preservation of these lands.”

SHAUNA REDFORD

“One of the joys I have found in moving into adulthood is the perspective I have been given. I grew up going to school in Manhattan, and the rest of my time was spent in Utah. Ironically, I now know that Utah is where I did the learning, and New York is where my knowledge was tested. I will never be bigger than these mountains. There will never be a day when I am not humbled by all the land offers. I have a deep family heritage in Utah and I know what a lucky girl I am to have my home, my true home – nestled in these mountains.”
